Kirk Topel, son of Hal Topel and current owner of Hal’s Harley-Davidson & Buell, loves dogs and motorcycles. In 1978, Hal Topel acquired J&S Cycles and changed its name to Hal's Harley-Davidson.
By the mid '70s, Kirk was sharing his father's love of motorcycles. The two rode on weekends, attending the many dirt track races held throughout the Midwest. These weekend rides were the seed that ultimately grew into what is now Hal's Harley-Davidson & Buell. |

The philosophy of the business is “service first” followed closely by giving back to the community. They host a spring open house and bike show that helps benefit a youth burn camp and sponsor an annual MDA summer camp ride and Make A Wish Foundation to name a few.
Kirk, his wife Annmarie, and their kids live in Shorewood with Murray and Effie. Murray is lucky in that he goes to work with dad everyday. Effie goes three days a week – the other two are spent at doggie day care. What a good life! Here’s a bit about Murray and Effie: |
Kirk with Effie and Murray |
What breed are the dogs? Both dogs are Lab mix - can you ever really know? Our vets differ in their opinion and of course dog owners you meet on the street also have their own sense of these things. That said, Murray may be mixed with Springer or German Shorthair. Effie is rumored to have Greyhound, Great Dane or Shepherd in her gene pool. When people ask me my opinion of what they are I say, “Murray is a black and white one. Effie is a black one.”
The dogs are spoiled with: Pigs ears once a week and free reign at dad’s work (for the most part.) We go on long walks on weekends with our parents. Our mom always does the little things for us and makes sure we are healthy.
Where do you sleep? Effie says: I sleep in bed with my owners until they tell me to get down because I am the princess. Then I sleep with my brother Murray on the floor on our blanket.
What activities are the dog’s favorites? Murray says: Eating treats and playing Kong. I love to chase Kong on the beach. Effie says: Playing, action, activity and being curious plus harassing my big brother.
Anything else? Kirk says: Our dogs are the great equalizers. They love unconditionally and are full of joy. They remind us humans the value in keeping things simple. They supply balance. All we need to do is listen.
